The Wine
Barón de Barbón wines always stand out for their supreme quality and value, as you’ll know if you’re a fan of the standard Rioja. The family cellar was founded in 1926 by José Murúa Villaverde, the latest in a long line of winemakers, but when he retired the winery was sold. In 1982 one of his sons – Julián Murúa Entrena – decided to repurchase the bodega to continue the family tradition. Now Julián’s talented son, Javier, has joined him. Made in a vintage officially rated as ‘Excellent’, this superb mellow Reserva was aged for two years in both French and American oak barrels to lend a lavish layer of spicy complexity. It’ll show at its best with roast lamb or game, its redcurrant notes setting off the flavours of the meat perfectly.
