The Wine
From its 1982 start, founder Jim Clendenen's aim was to make world-class Burgundian style wines. He'd visited France in the mid 1970s and on his return, researched until he'd found the perfect spot in California – the ocean-cooled climate and marine soils of Santa Maria Valley, and within it, the Santa Rita Hills. 40 years later, the wines have a world-class reputation. These vineyards are ideal for growing grapes - hence the name 'Au Bon Climat' (a good climate). This Pinot Noir uses fruit from the oldest section of the prestigious Sanford & Benedict Vineyard in the cool Santa Rita Hills. Handpicked grapes, whole cluster pressing and ageing in French oak barrels give fresh berry aromas with savoury layers, and great ageing potential.
