The Wine
Cantemerle may have been the last to be added to the famous 1855 Bordeaux classification, but it's one of the first clarets to consider when it comes to value for money. Located in the southern Médoc, near the villages of Macau and Ludon, the château prides itself on vineyards with deep gravel soils. The wines are made under the guidance of Eric Boissenot, a consultant oenologist who also looks after many of Bordeaux's classified estates, including all four Médoc First Growths. With Boissenot on hand, you know you're getting the best. Allée de Cantemerle is their superb second wine, using the grapes from younger vines. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged a year in French oak barrels, this Left Bank claret makes exceptional drinking now.
