Trevenezie IGP

Here’s a smooth, silky blend of native Refosco and Merlot that winemaker Alessandro Gallici is proud to put his name to. Balancing silky ripe plum, fig and earthy cherry with warming spice and espresso notes, it’s an easy-going, very moreish red.

The Wine
Refosco is one of Italy’s most deliciously appealing, little-known red grapes. Decanter raves about its “brightness of fruit teamed with tangy acidity”. It’s grown almost exclusively in the cool Alpine foothills of northern Friuli, where it makes bright, juicy reds that the locals like to keep for themselves. But here’s one we’ve prised away. And from one of the region’s greatest winemakers. Starting with just a few rows of vines in his family’s garden and a tiny garage, Alessandro Gallici has become one of our favourite Italian producers. In this red, he’s added a portion of Merlot to fill out Refosco’s earthy ripe plum with freshness and a little creamy cherry weight. Perfect to sip on its own, but also great with chicken or curry.
