Mülheimer is a top village of the Mosel, its steep slate vineyards producing fine Riesling with lively minerality and laser precision fruit. We’ve been buying from the 17th century Richter estate there for a decade now, impressed today, as ever, with the winemaking of the 10th generation. They supply the royal cellars at Buckingham Palace, so presumably the Queen is partial to this tasty tipple too. Hugh Johnson calls the Richter estate “an extremely consistent producer of classic Mosel Rieslings”. Sonnen means sunshine and there’s plenty of that, but don’t expect high alcohol. The terroir gives a wine that’s light on its feet – this 2020 is a taut high wire act of succulent fruit and cleansing acidity. A delight solo or with light dishes.
