The Wine
Founded only in 1946, Barbeito may be the youngest Madeira house on this remarkable island, but it certainly more than holds its own. Third generation Ricardo de Freitas now runs the show. Jancis Robinson MW called Barbeito “the established star of this atmospheric Atlantic island”. This bodega produces the full range of styles and was first to pioneer Colheitas (single vintage). Dedicated to the production of pure, authentic Madeira, the cellar has won much praise worldwide for its efforts, with perhaps the greatest adulation going to this 10 year old Sercial. Sercial is not only the name of the style, but of the grape, too. It is the driest version, yet has fathoms of flavour, richness and fruit. Truly a creation to sip slowly and relish.
