Tosco Rosso 2018

Toscana IGT

An amazing deal Tuscan – a mini Brunello from star of the region Poggio Salvi. Vines must be 12 years old before they allow the Sangiovese to be included into their glorious Brunello. At 11 years, they instead make this sumptuous barrel aged red.

Brunello is one of Italy's most worshipped wines, bottles of which go for £30 upwards. These Tuscan wines are based on the Sangiovese grape and are so fine and well built, they last for years. Tosco is very much in the Brunello mould – a rich red based on the finest Sangiovese, but with fewer of those formidable tannins. The grapes are all from 11 year old vines and although appellation rules permit them (as young as 4 years in fact), at Poggio Salvi they will only permit them in the big brother wine from 12 years. On a recent visit, our Buyer Leo spotted a few barrels in the corner that he hadn't tasted from and enquired. Inside was this wine – a sumptuous, deep plum and dark cherry red with a subtle wrap of oak. Decant early and savour.

"Mini Brunello from younger vines – exciting release from this Tuscan estate. Decant for now or keep" Leonardo Bassano
