The Wine
Alongside their classic Brunello di Montalcino, Poggio Antico created Altero back in 1983. In a break with tradition, it was aged for only two years in French 500 litre barrels (the legal requirements at the time demanded at least three years in large Slavonian casks). The result was a more generous, fruit driven style that still retained the unmistakable savoury complexity and silky texure of textbook Brunello. In 2000 the legislators caught up with the times and changed their strict rules so Altero could be labeled Brunello di Montalcino. Now many wineries follow the path trodden by Poggio Antico – though none can match the splendour of Altero. Savour this Tuscan triumph with rib-eye steak, calf’s liver or wild mushroom risotto.
