Discover a thrilling cult white of southwest France ... Jurançon
Jurançon is a little-known star appellation of southwest France, with beautiful views of the snow-capped Pyrenees. Its white wines rarely reach UK shores, but are a superb, authentic taste of the region’s quirky Manseng grape.
The Barrère family have been making estate wines here for two generations. Founder, Alfred Barrère was a great champion of the region and was key in getting the dry whites appellation status in 1975 (the sweet wines had gained it 40 years earlier).
His daughters – Anne Marie and Christiane – took over the running of the domaine for the next 50 years. Sadly Anne Marie passed away in 2024, but in the hands of Christiane and her grand maman, 96-year-old Madame Barrère (she runs the kitchen garden!), plus a little outside help from winemaker Damiens Sartori, the great wine continues.
Until a few years back, nearly all their wine had been sold locally direct from the estate, but with an ageing clientele and younger locals choosing to buyer from le supermarché, the ladies were worried about the future. With Vineyard Partners' enthusiastic support, the domaine and its wine are ensured a bright future.
Ahead of the curve in the Jurançon
The horseshoe-shaped rows of vines are the signature of the Jurançon region. They’re not just a beautiful sight. These traditional curved vineyards allow for optimum sun exposure, so the fruit can ripen perfectly, while the proximity of the Pyrenees ensures the wines retain a core of minerality and pure freshness.
A recent report in Wine Advocate described Jurançon as producing:
"Some of the most exciting dry white wines in the area ... delivering wines of remarkable freshness and vitality, even in warmer vintages"
The article finished:
"Jurançon’s dry wines [are] among southwest France’s most exciting and highest-quality offerings. With the further appeal of competitive pricing, all the elements are aligned to make the appellation a top destination for wine lovers"
