In 1989, inspired by his great passion for Puglia, its land and its growers, Angelo Maci set up the Cantine Due Palme cooperative. From small beginnings, it has grown and has won many top awards – three times ‘Best Winemaker of Puglia’, ‘Best Italian Winery’, plus a Lifetime Achievement award for Angelo himself. He is an inspiration … his face is on billboards … a champion of the people and its great winemaking traditions. Yet Angelo and his team are also pioneers, leading the area in technical advancements and sustainability, too, before it was even fashionable.
Angelo was President of the co-op for many years, but has now handed that responsibility over to his daughter, Melissa. He is still very much involved and knows each grower by name and truly values every one of them.
Their flagship red is the Selvarossa dei Confratelli Riserva, reserved for these growers and honorary ‘grower’ Partners.

Angelo Maci and the beginnings of Cantine due Palme
Growing up in rural Puglia (the heel of Italy’s boot), Angelo Maci learned respect for the land from his grandfather, with whom he lived. When he became a winemaker himself, he set out to save the region’s ancient vines and winemaking traditions. First he wanted to help farmers, who were being badly squeezed on grape price by merchants in the north. So, he set up Cantine Due Palme to ensure growers received fair pay for their work.
That was in 1989 with just 15 local growers. Today, there are over 1,000. Since then, Cantine Due Palme has won a huge tally of top awards, as has Angelo himself.
Many customers will know the cellar's much-loved Pillastro red. Their flagship Selvarossa dei Confratelli Riserva from the premium Salice Salentino subregion is even bigger, richer and more concentrated in flavour.
