A CENTURY-OLD 'ILLEGAL' VINEYARD AND ITS GREAT PORTUGUESE RED
Lobo e Falcão Centenário Grande Reserva
6 bottles – £144 £96 (£16 per bottle)
12 bottles – £288 £192 (£16 per bottle)
José Lobo’s beautiful, 18th-century Quinta do Casal Branco estate has been in the Lobo de Vasconcelos family for 250 years. In fact it used to be a royal falconry, visited by nobility for its sport, and still has an ancient dove cote in the grounds.
The property is also renowned for its fine Lusitano horses, one of which José rides every morning as he inspects the estate.
In total, Quinta do Casal Branco boasts 125 hectares of vines in Portugal’s beautiful Tejo region, but just one small, 100-year-old vineyard is preserved as it always has been – dotted with equally ancient olive trees. That’s simply the way farmers used to plant out their land a century back. And José is adamant he won’t change that. The vines are a mix of different varieties, a field blend, just like the old days, which accounts for the breadth of gorgeous, rich fruit in this prized, barrel-aged red.

Superb deep exotic aroma, fresh menthol notes, very high quality fruit ... Excellent tannins, textured, chocolate, tobacco, with excellent power”

Sustainability in tejo
Under the guidance of José Lobo, Quinta do Casal Branco has long been mindful of the environment and their footprint on the planet. To this end, they've been working hard to achieve Sustainability Certification. It was awarded to them in 2024 – one of only eight Portuguese wineries to have done so.
Their philosophy is very much 'reuse' rather than 'discard', so grape pomace (the skins, pips and stalks) is broken down and fed back to the vines as compost. The hay from the horses is also used as compost in the vineyards and the gardens. Waste water is collected, treated and used again. Plus, they are strong on biodiversity – maintaining and restoring hedgerows, wooded copses, encouraging birds, insects and wildlife.
