Flavour Profile
Introducing Winzer Krems Blauer Zweigelt, the juicy star made with Austria’s champion local red grape.
For a long time, Austrian wines rarely made it out of the country – most were enjoyed by locals. But in recent years, Austria has quietly built a cult following for its wines, especially for its crisp Grüner Veltliner whites. Now it’s time for its red wines to shine, led by their No. 1 favourite – Blauer Zweigelt. Perfectly suited to Austria’s climate, you often hear it compared to Pinot Noir due to its silky finesse and oodles of fruity charm.
This delicious example comes from a small estate in Krems, a town with over 2,000 years of winemaking tradition and the vineyards overlook one of the most beautiful stretches of the Danube. All the grapes are hand harvested and gently handled to preserve their vibrant fruit and soft peppery spice.
Seriously moreish with ripe strawberries, cherries and a touch of pepper, it’s rich enough to enjoy with a barbecue, but soft enough to enjoy lightly chilled with chargrilled vegetables or charcuterie.
