The Story Behind the Bottle
Germany’s Pfalz region is best known for Riesling, but it excels with other aromatic whites too. Pinot Gris (richer than wines labelled by its synonym Pinot Grigio) is another stand out grape, especially in the hands of Ernst Loosen, a leading light of modern winemaking. He was one of the first to show that Germany could excel at crisp dry whites, a style that appeals more to modern tastes. His wines are today renowned around the world. The 18th-century Villa Wolf estate is one of his rescue projects and this well-balanced, rounded, ripely fruity and lemony-fresh Pinot Gris shows his skill. Its creamy peach, grapefruit and bright stony freshness make it an ideal wine with many chicken or fish dishes, or try it with sushi, for a change.
