Tony’s Inside Track – Six great wines
A six-bottle case that tells the background of my 50-year obsession discovering great, unknown wines and bringing them to you.
I began my wine journey back in 1969, driven by a simple belief: the best wines aren't always the most expensive. By venturing beyond the famous names and seeking out little-known regions, I met immensely talented growers tending wonderful vineyards, often just a stone's throw from far pricier appellations. For me it proved that seriously good wines didn’t have to come with a ridiculously large price tag. Here I have put together a selection of six bottles that I’d really like to share with you.
Cheers, Tony Laithwaite CBE
What’s inside the case:
- Enclos de La Clarière 2023 – just six metres from Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé, this tiny Castillon vineyard is exactly the sort of discovery that keeps me going off the beaten track.
- Wilson Gunn 2023 – my son Henry made the first vintage of this wine … and it scored 94 points. A powerful Aussie Cabernet Shiraz still handcrafted from tiny parcels of premium Coonawarra and Barossa grapes.
- Charles Cros 2025 – a wine that nearly disappeared forever … the ancient winemaking method was too much bother. Not for one young winemaker … from the Corbières region, this red is bursting with deliciously approachable, juicy fruit.
- Altos R Gran Reserva 2018 – Jean-Marc was born in Bordeaux, trained at Haut-Brion and then headed to Rioja determined to do things differently at his beautiful bodega up in the clouds. Intensity, elegance and complexity in this fine Gran Reserva Rioja.
- Hérisson Chardonnay 2025 – Burgundy quality without the Burgundy price tag. Decades of boots-on-the-ground winemaking friendships, sometimes pay back big time. Adam Mason’s Hérisson is one of those wines – luscious, creamy, oaked Chardonnay from the Cape.
- Hunter’s Gewürztraminer 2025 – from the estate that launched Marlborough Sauvignon on the world 40 years ago and we’re still working together. Life-long friends. A lively, crisp and characterful New Zealand Gewürz.
This is a personal selection – six bottles that remind me why we’ve spent more than 50 years travelling wine regions, meeting growers and looking where others don’t. Each one tells a different story about how we find great, unknown wines.
Save £36 with this case – just £85 for six bottles … wines that take you on a journey of true wine discovery.
