The Wine
If you like a white with lots of personality (think tasty spice and rounded exotic fruit), then reach for Gewürztraminer. It's best known as a grape that thrives in the cool vineyards of Alsace, but we were wowed by this fruit-forward example from sunny Valencia. It comes from the excellent La Viña cellar, where Marta Martínez is winemaker. Our buyer dropped by and was offered a glass to revive her in the 40-degree heat. Boom! The rest, they say, is history. The wine has explosive flavours of orange and lemon peel and lychee, with a truly zingy finish. As critic Will Lyons wrote "in mid summer, as the temperatures rise and dusk falls later, a glass of chilled Gewurz is exactly what the palate craves". Great solo or with spicy dishes.
