The Wine
Since the 17th century, Rufina has been marked out as a source of world-class Chianti. And there are few better addresses than Selvapiana, an estate owned by Francesco Giuntini’s family since 1827. It’s a classic Tuscan property that includes woodland, olive groves and 60 hectares of vineyards, nearly all planted to Sangiovese. Chianti’s most noble red grape thrives in the clay and limestone soils. It’s also 150-200 metres above sea level where cool nights and gentle breezes keep the grapes beautifully fresh. Low yields, traditional winemaking techniques and 12 months’ ageing in oak barrels produce a Riserva with great structure and complexity. Supple enough to enjoy now, but decant well in advance. Worth cellaring a bottle or two as well.
