The Wine
In 1996, Turin-born Pier Paolo Monti bought a historical Barolo property in Piedmont, south of Monforte d’Alba. He immediately brought his winemaker friend Roberto Gerbino on board, they bought a few barriques from France and made their first wine – a Barbera d’Alba. Today they have 18 hectares of vines, growing mostly native Nebbiolo and Barbera, with a few experimental vineyards of Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet and Merlot. He built a state-of-the-art winery, completely solar-powered and underground cellars for ageing the wines. This is their classic Barolo, pure Nebbiolo, aged in seasoned French oak of various sizes, to gently flatter the fruit, never to obscure it. The wine is already drinking well – decant a few hours beforehand.
