Opus One 2018
This Franco-American masterpiece is undisputedly one of California's finest reds. A Mondavi-Rothschild project set up 40 years ago, its wines still astound. The 98-point 2018 explodes with gorgeous layers of ripe fruits and promises much more.

The Story Behind the Bottle
Opus One was established in 1978, a joint venture between two legendary wine figures, the late Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild. The aim was to create a Californian wine in the mould of a Médoc First Growth. It became an immediate international hit and in 1981 a case of it was sold at auction for $24,000. The iconic Opus One winery, designed by Johnson, Fain & Pereira, was completed in 1991 and is as famous as the wine. The 2018 is a classic Médoc blend – Cabernet-dominated, with Petit Verdot, Merlot and a twist of Malbec, aged in French oak for a year and a half. It has amazing depth of rich, layered flavours of espresso, dark chocolate, undergrowth and dense fruit. Decant early or, best, cellar.
