The Wine
Joseph Dhafana’s journey in wine is like something out of a movie. A Zimbabwean refugee, he first tasted wine on his 29th birthday while working at a bar in Cape Town – and never looked back. After rising to become head sommelier at fine dining establishment La Colombe, he went on to lead Team Zimbabwe in the World Blind Tasting Championships in 2017. He now crafts superb wines under his own label, and Flavian Syrah is one of the tastiest and best value reds in his range. Made from hand-harvested grapes and matured in oak barrels for 18 months, its a rich yet elegant red with juicy bramble fruit and peppery notes. Let it breathe to allow the flavours to open out, and enjoy with grilled or barbecued lamb chops, or a Sunday roast.

Cracking wine. Think Northern Rhône - Crozes Hermitage-ish, just with a bit more African sunshine
