The Wine
Roche de Bellene is the project of Nicolas Potel, whose father Gérard ran the renowned Domaine de la Pousse d’Or. Gérard’s untimely death meant the estate had to be sold, but Nicolas’ new venture instantly received acclaim. The Times wrote of him: “When Nicolas Potel set up shop, he was clearly destined for the top.” Nicolas has focused his efforts on creating expressive, organic wines from the fruit of old vines (up to 100+ years old), as well sourcing grapes from like-minded growers. Painstaking care ensures they express all the unique character of the terroir. Using grapes from Les Violettes and Hautes Maizières, this is a nuanced red with youthful, sappy fruit. Open early and decant, or cellar. Ideal with lamb or mushroom dishes.
