The Wine
For a really appetising white, with a classic touch of spritz and a low 9°ABV, reach for a bottle of Vinho Verde. Lavagante is a modern, fresh take on this Portuguese classic – super zingy-fresh and dry. The region lies in Portugal's NW corner and, close to the Atlantic, is one of its dampest. This only adds to the thirst-quenching freshness of its whites. Manuel Lopo de Carvalho is the winemaker, using here Loureiro, one of the area’s top white grapes, nicknamed the 'Riesling of Portugal'. It brings lemony finesse and minerality, while Arinto adds more citrus, Trajadura ripe pear and blossom notes and Avesso, grapefruit, peach and almond. With its light spritz, it's great solo or, as you might expect from its label, with seafood.
