The Wine
Antinori is renowned in wine circles for breaking tradition in the 1970s and introducing Bordeaux varieties to Tuscany. That gave birth to a revolution in Italian winemaking and the release of Super Tuscans, often table wines (vini do tavola) that cost more than the fanciest Chianti Classicos! In 1990, Antinori again broke free, buying the fine La Braccesca estate in southern Tuscany’s Vino Nobile di Montepulciano region. There he has 340 hectares of vines, but just 15 hectares of a single vineyard, called Santa Pia, devoted to the Prugnolo (a special Sangiovese clone) grapes for his top Riserva. Rocky, sandy loam soils help promote crispness and elegance in this wine. Powerful, dense and layered – it'll benefit from cellaring.
