The Wine
Danish-born, Bordeaux-trained oenologist Peter Sisseck was dispatched to Spain in the 1990s. He came across the then unknown Ribera del Duero region and recognised the region’s huge potential. He searched out plots of ancient vines and the result was the foundation of Dominio de Pingus in 1995, organically managed from the start and biodynamic since 2000. The first wine is Pingus, the second label, almost as sought after as the ‘Grand Vin’ is Flor de Pingus, using grapes all from around the village of La Horra. 95% Tempranillo and 5% Garnacha, coplanted. Vinified and aged in new oak barriques (20%) and some in new large oak vats, the wine has succulent red fruit with grippy tannins and freshness, along with a seam of oak spice. Open early.
