The Wine
Gerhard Swarts took over as head winemaker at the Flagstone winery from the flamboyant Bruce Jack in 2008. Since then, he’s won some of South Africa’s most coveted Trophies. Bruce called him “the best winemaker I’ve ever met”, which is high praise from a winemaker who’s pretty cool himself. Here Gerhard’s taken three quarters Sauvignon Blanc with a portion of Semillon – the classic white Bordeaux blend – and made a tasty, vibrant white. Forward aromas of lemon, gooseberry, asparagus, even a hint of thyme, with notes of honeyed cream. It’s great drunk now, but the Semillon in the blend (28%) means it ages brilliantly too – Gerhard reckons up to 10 years! Nicely rounded and weighty, it’s a great with seafood or creamy chicken dishes.
