The Story Behind the Bottle

The De Wets of Excelsior boast a winemaking tradition dating back centuries. And of all our producers, their wines receive the very highest ratings from customers on our website — something that makes fifth-generation Peter De Wet and his team very proud. Their latest expression, Excelsior Calcrete Chardonnay, is delicious proof of that legacy.

Their estate lies in Robertson, just two hours from Cape Town. It's one of South Africa's best grape-growing regions, full of beautiful undulating mountains, traditional farmsteads and vineyards. But to truly understand what makes this wine special, we need to travel back a few million years.

Back to when the region was under water. As the ancient seas receded, they left behind buried fossil beds that became ivory-coloured nuggets of limestone known as calcrete. Something similar happened in Chablis. And guess what? Both regions are Chardonnay quality hotspots. Magic happens when this classic variety digs deep into calcrete.

But the real magic is when you taste the wine. There’s a fresh minerality that gives your palate a cool sensation, regardless of the wine’s temperature. That’s followed by a zingy freshness and saline finish that makes you crave the next sip.

And it’s so good with food. There’s a lime-fresh tang that complements seafood, and a tightness that cuts through rich dishes.
