The Wine
Beaujolais is one of France's trendiest wine regions, its reds delicious and exciting. Morgon is one of its most sought-after Cru villages and this is one from the treasured Grand Cras 'climat', the wines of which are reputed to be close in style to Burgundy's velvety Pommard. This is a prize parcel from Dominique Piron's 17th-century estate. He boasts 95 hectares of premium vineyard, a third of those in Morgon, a speciality of his. With no children of his own, he has joined up with his good friend Julien Revillon and together they have a vision to produce Beaujolais as fine as any Grand Cru Burgundy. Grown on the blue granite soils of Grand Cras, this is pure seduction. Dark smoky cherry fruit with a seam of minerality. A winner with duck.
