The Story Behind the Bottle
Tony Laithwaite first championed Jurançon Sec 40 years ago. In 2019 he discovered another outstanding white from a tiny, 3-hectare vineyard – Clos de la Vierge. It’s run by two 70+ year old sisters, Anne-Marie and Christiane, who tend vines that are almost the same age, while their 95-year-old maman looks after the kitchen garden. Their fabulous Clos de la Vierge white is made purely from the local superstar grape, Gros Manseng. This variety produces remarkable wine, with richness and weight, what the French term ‘gras’ - lush peachy fruit and floral aromas, with a lovely whip of mineral freshness. You’ll certainly find all this superb character in the sisters’ wine. Delicious on its own or with garlic chicken or roasted cod loin.
