The Wine
Faugères is one of the top Crus of the Languedoc, adored for its warming, rich, ripe reds. Our buyer Mark Hoddy lives in the area, so is close at hand to make some exciting discoveries from small family domaines. Château Roc du Cayla is one, perched high near the town of Roquessels, with its impressive hilltop castle. The domaine's top vineyard is Le Pioch, meaning 'the pick' and refers to the tool needed to get through the hard stony soils. Surrounded by oak trees, Le Pioch has a warm Mediterranean climate, essential to fully ripen the Mourvèdre grapes, the peppery flavour of which flatters the ripe blackberry notes of Syrah and the raspberry hints of Grenache. Floral with silky, ripe black fruit, this is great with grilled meats.
