The Wine
Pessac Léognan is a premium corner of the Graves renowned for luxurious, oak fermented whites as well as fine red Bordeaux. It is home to Premier Grand Cru Classé Château Haut-Brion, whose original, 16th century owner was Jean de Pontac. The Pontac family owned Château Pontac Monplaisir until the French Revolution, using it as a hunting lodge. Since 1955 the property has been nurtured by Jean Maufras. It’s a small estate, with nine hectares of red grapes, plus two of white, from which they make this fine, oak fermented wine. Lees stirring and oak ageing of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and a little Sauvignon Gris lend a spicy weave through the mature honeyed, nutty notes of this fine 2012. Serve it gently chilled with sauced white meat or fish.
