The Story Behind the Bottle
Nicolas Thienpont heads up the winemaking teams at Saint-Émilion Grands Crus Château Pavie-Macquin and Château Larcis Ducasse. And in 2000, he purchased the 7-hectare estate of Château La Prade in Francs Côtes de Bordeaux, just a few miles northeast of Saint-Émilion. Nicolas has been instrumental in raising the profile of this lesser-known appellation, and his wines offer terrific value given their impeccable pedigree. He treats this just like one of his famous Grands Crus, with rigorous selection in the vineyards, whole-bunch fermentation, long ageing in the finest oak barrels – the works. Aged at the château until drinking at its best, the 2014 is supple, soft and silky with plush dark fruit, hints of tobacco, leather and earthy spice.
