This luscious old-vine Shiraz is from Winery of the Year Angove, an innovative family cellar with an eye for tradition. They first crafted Heavyweight Shiraz in the ’60s and have revived the name with this 2016 full of liquorice and blackberry spice.

The Story Behind the Bottle
As well as single vineyard wines, this family winery also makes traditional offerings such as The Heavyweight – a big, spicy Shiraz first produced in the 1960s. It’s now been resurrected – it delivers all the smooth power and ripe fruit for which it originally attracted a loyal following, but with new added intensity from 40 year old vines, mostly grown in premium McLaren Vale. This cellar dates back to 1886, when Dr William Angove, recently arrived in South Australia from England, first made a rich red wine as a tonic for his patients. He became renowned for his brandy, too. That innovative spirit lives on today at the excellent McLaren Vale estate run by the fifth generation. A classic Aussie Shiraz to serve with lamb or beef dishes.
