The Wine
Altos was founded in 2006 by the Haut-Brion-trained winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua. His aim was to make finest Rioja along Grand Cru Classé lines. So he only uses old-vine grapes from vineyards at 700 metres altitude and climbing. At that height, nights are cold, even in summer, so the grapes are slow to ripen. All the better for freshness and elegance. Add in the expertise and classic training of Jean-Marc Sauboua, and it’s no surprise Altos has won many top awards (over 300 Golds and four trophies). This fine 2019 blends the best cuvées of the vintage, while two years' ageing in part-new French oak lends structure and complexity. With its dark cherry flavours and toasty oak spice, the Reserva is superb with game or lamb. Best decanted.

Dark plums, baked black cherries, roasted licorice spices and a hint of dark walnut. Rich and ripe
