The Story Behind the Bottle

Palazzo delle Toro is the type of wine that made Allegrini famous – a dense red of extraordinary richness and length.

It’s made by Franco Allegrini who is considered one of the finest winemakers in Italy. He only uses grapes that are classic to the region in the Palazzo – Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella – all sourced from vineyards first planted in 1962 to ensure real intensity of flavour. These vines surround a beautiful Renaissance palace in the heart of Valpolicella now owned by the family.

The precious grapes are picked in two sweeps – the first (70%) carefully and traditionally fermented, the second batch air-dried for two months before being added to the main portion of wine, then refermented in old oak casks, much like the Ripasso method that has become so fashionable. This lends a dense, cherry complexity and depth to the wine, with gentle hints of spice and oak. James Suckling described the 2022 as, “An intense wine with multilayered fruit, showing sour cherries, blackberries, plums, vibrant black pepper and nicely integrated vanilla. Chewy on the palate.”

A magnificent red that makes a fine match with rich pork dishes or saffron risotto.
