The Wine
This is the type of wine that made Allegrini famous – a powerful Amarone of extraordinary richness and length made by Franco Allegrini, one of the finest winemakers in Italy. The grapes – Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and the ancient Oseleta – are from vineyards first planted 30 years ago, all family owned. The fruit is carefully harvested then left to dry naturally for 120 days, with daily checking. During this time the grapes lose 40 to 45% of their weight – no wonder flavour and concentration is so great. After a long, slow fermentation, this superb Amarone is aged in part new oak barriques to lend complexity, structure and toasty wood notes to the wine. A dense, weighty red with balancing acidity. Serve with a hearty meat casserole.
