Germany’s Pfalz region is best known for Riesling, but other aromatic whites shine there too, particularly in great vintages. And 2019 was exceptional, possibly ”the best vintage of the century so far" said Jancis Robinson. Ernst Loosen is a shiny star of modern German winemaking, and one of the first to show that Germany could excel at crisp dry as well as medium whites. His wines are renowned worldwide. Climate change has helped, of course, the extra warmth producing more sugar in the grapes. The 18th century Villa Wolf estate is one of Ernst's rescue projects and this is an exotic, medium dry Gewürz. It's fresh, fruity and wonderfully light on its feet. Ideal solo or with pan-fried fish, lightly spiced Asian dishes or pungent cheeses.
