Owner of this superb estate is Juan Pablo Peñalba De Perez Albeniz, son of the founders of the renowned Finca Torremilanos in Ribera del Duero. In 1999 Juan Pablo decided to establish his own cellar in ancient Toro. He paired up with Victor Garretas, whose family have been tending vines there for 200 years. The result is the Valpiculata estate, with just 15 hectares of vines, situated at 600 to 850 metres high and grown organically. Some of them are bush vines over a century old and still ungrafted (most have to be grafted onto American rootstocks to overcome the phylloxera pest) and producing fruit of phenomenal intensity and complexity. Only ever released in small quantities, this rare red should be double decanted an hour before serving.
