We reserve our Back Deck Merlot label for the best parcel of Merlot our Buyer, Dan, finds in South Australia – he's looking for a well balanced red with deep fruit, aromatics and a good bite of freshness too. In 2019, he was most impressed by a cuvée of Merlot from the Limestone Coast region. There vines receive full sunshine to ripen the grapes, as well as cooling ocean breezes. The result is deeply plummy flavour, yet still with a lovely vibrancy. From the first vintage onwards this wine has been so smooth and full of juicy plum flavour that it was a top choice for winemakers to enjoy at the end of a hard day’s graft. On the back deck, hence the name. Really tasty with a spicy pork, minty lamb chops or a herby borlotti bean casserole.
