The Story Behind the Bottle
Named after the ancient Monkey King who had an insatiable hunger for roasted coconuts (Noix de Coco Rôties), this is a superbly balanced red. It’s from RedHeads and last year scored 95 points and four Golds. This tiny winery has only one vineyard. For the rest they have an impressive list of contacts to draw upon, to ensure, every year, they receive just the fruit they’re after. For Coco Rôtie, it was Jeff McMurtrie’s 30 year old Shiraz vineyard, lifted by a splash of Viognier. With 20 years’ experience, Jeff is a dab hand at extracting the very best from his patch of vines. Open top fermenters, hand plunging and oak ageing by the RedHeads team have produced a red with dense fruit and velvety tannins. Beef stew or lamb are ideal partners.
