Marselan crosses Cabernet's deep colour and lavish fruit with the raspberry notes and heat tolerance of Grenache. It's even permitted in Bordeaux now! This, however, is a knockout black red from the Languedoc, packed with ripe blackberry and spice.

This is our next new find in the brigade of Big Black Reds – an irresistible, velvet smooth wine made purely from Marselan. Not heard of it? Relatively speaking, it's new - created in 1961 to bring together the best things about Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. It has small berries, so colour is deep, yet tannins are silky smooth – ripe blackberry fruit and spice, all wrapped up in a velvet glove. It doesn't mind the heat, either, which makes it a bit of saviour to growers in regions affected by global warming. It's even been adopted by the traditional Bordelais! Winemaker Bénédicte Bibes has produced this mouthfilling, velvety red. Supple enough to enjoy solo and a delight with toad in the hole, roast chicken and all sorts of cheeses.

"For lovers of warming, smooth reds, I recommend this great Marselan, a silky dark fruit sensation" Mark Hoddy
