Chile and Carmenère go together like hand in glove, yet it was only in the 1990s that Chilean vignerons realised they were growing it! They thought it was Merlot until ampelography (the study of vines) proved otherwise. Now lovers of smooth, silky reds can’t get enough of it. This is a charming red from the Balduzzi family, whose winemaking heritage goes back in Italy to the 1700s. On arriving in Chile, they settled in the Maule Valley. Today the founder’s grandson Jorge Balduzzi runs the estate, with winemaker Juan Canales and oenologist Fernando Ureta. They aim to capture maximum flavour with minimal environmental impact, through the most efficient use of energy and water. This supple red is tasty solo or with chicken or a spicy pilaf.

"Juicy, smooth, easy going and charming – what more could you want from a well-priced red?" Beth Willard
