Matt Thomson has worked 40 vintages in the 23 years he’s been a winemaker. He’s had experience around the globe and consulted for some of the most famous names in the business, but finally he decided, with his winemaker wife Sophie, to make wine for himself. His Blank Canvas represents the vineyard, he says, the grape and winery his brush and palette. His favourite source for Marlborough Sauvignon is Dillons Point and the Holdaway family’s vineyard, close to the sea, is one of the best. This wine has picked up four top awards. Fermented with wild yeasts in old oak barrels, it’s not straightforward Marlborough Sauvignon, but rich, subtly spicy, savoury with some citrus weight. A terrific food wine – with fish pie or creamy white meat dishes.
