The Wine
Château La Gaffelière is one of the oldest family-owned vineyards in Saint-Émilion. Indeed, the family can trace their origins in the Right Bank back to the 1400s. Gaffelière translates to leper colony, so it's likely that at some point in its long history it was just that. Today, of course, it's renowned for its very fine 1er Grand Cru Classé wines. It owns 38 hectares of vines, both on the Côtes and the foot of the slope, with this vintage all coming from the vines just below those of renowned top property Château Ausone. It is aged in up to 80% new oak barrels, for up to 20 months, depending on the qualities of the vintage. James Suckling wrote of 2022, "this is serious. Bold and structured with beautiful fruit." One to tuck away.
