TOP CAPE WINEMAKER AND HIS SENSATIONAL SYRAH
Savage Hommage à B Syrah
6 bottles – £168 £108 (£18 per bottle)
12 bottles – £336 £216 (£18 per bottle)
Duncan Savage first blazed a trail at South Africa's Cape Point Winery, his wines winning the top 5-Star Platter (like the Michelin guide to SA wines) rating.
After 14 years, he decided to go out on his own, with a tiny boutique winery in the centre of Cape Town. He continues to win a great array of press plaudits – as you'll see from the handful of quotes below.
Duncan searches out the very best, coastal-cooled vineyards, then works closely with the growers to make the very most of what nature has to offer. His wines are some of the purist, most elegant you’ll meet in South Africa.
Boetie was one of his great grower mates, producing exceptionally fine grapes. Duncan was very sad when, so young, Boetie died. This wine is a tribute to the great grower, using the grapes from Boetie's own vineyard, the care of which Duncan has now taken over. We think Duncan has done Boetie proud with this exceptional, elegant, fresh-tasting Syrah.

"Duncan Savage thinks he hasn’t hit his full potential yet. Heaven help his rivals when he does”

Coolness and south africa
How do South Africa's top winemakers retain such, freshness, elegance and balance in their wines in such a hot, sunny climate? The secret is the large body of water that surrounds the Western Cape – the Southern Atlantic ocean. With strong currents from Antarctica, the water never gets warmer than 12-14°C. The temperature difference between the land and the sea creates strong, cooling winds – “like supersonic air conditioning, just perfect for crisp whites and delicate reds,” said winemaker, Jean-Marc Sauboua. No wonder Duncan Savage chooses vineyards that benefit from the ravages of strong Atlantic winds.
