Duncan Savage first blazed a trail at Cape Point Winery, his wines winning the top 5-Star Platter (like the Michelin guide to SA wines) rating. After 14 years, he decided to go out on his own, with a tiny boutique winery in the centre of Cape Town. He searches out the very best, coastal-cooled vineyards, and his wines are some of the purist, most elegant you’ll meet in South Africa. Boetie was one of his great grower mates, producing exceptionally fine grapes. Duncan was very sad when, so young, Boetie suddenly died. This wine is a tribute to the great grower – we think Duncan has done him proud.
The wine:
Don’t expect jammy or big – this is a red of pure fruit elegance and finesse, silky with subtle nuances of flavour and just a whisper of oak. It’s Syrah from Boetie’s own vineyard, now tended by Duncan. He isn’t allowed to buy the vineyard – South African inheritance laws – but the family is very happy for Duncan to look after it, so it’s like his own. And from the grapes, he makes this fabulous, pure-fruit red.
