A beginner’s guide to types of wine glasses

Venture into the glassware section of any homeware shop, and you’re likely to be faced with an array of wine glasses in every conceivable shape and style. If you’re puzzled by why there are so many types of wine glasses, and if it really matters which one you use, we’ve got the answers for you here.

Wine Glasses FAQs

What are different types of wine glasses for?

For some wine lovers, one type of wine glass is enough.

Others prefer different styles for red and white wines. Some enthusiasts even like to use different glasses for different grape varieties – such as the Varietal Specific Glassware designed by Reidel.

Then of course, you have Champagne glasses (flutes or coupes), dessert wine glasses and more to consider. Seems a lot to think about, right?

But don’t worry – we have all the answers for you in our Beginner’s guide to types of wine glasses.

And spoiler alert – the most important thing is to choose glasses you like!

Tips for cleaning your wine glasses

As long as your glasses don’t have gold painted rims or similar decoration, you can simply wash them in the dishwasher. Here are some tips for best results:

  • Wash glasses separately to avoid risk of damage.
  • Keep the dishwasher topped up with dishwasher salt. This helps keep the water soft and prevents streaking.
  • Make sure the filter is clean to ensure fresh, odour-free glassware.

Some prefer to hand wash – and this is perfectly fine too. Here are some tips:

  • Focus on the outside and the rim, as they will likely need most attention.
  • Use minimal detergent and rinse thoroughly.

Air dry – and then polish with a dedicated glasses cloth or, better still, a microfibre cloth.

Tips for taking care of your wine glasses

Wine glasses are, by their very nature, made of thin glass – and can be easily breakable.

Here are our top tips for glass care:

  • If using a dishwasher, wash your glasses separately from other dishes and give plenty of space between them to avoid breakage.
  • If drying by hand, air dry if possible. To polish, hold the glass by the stem and use a microfiber cloth – taking extra care when drying the inside.
  • For really precious glasses, store them in the box they came in to prevent accidental breakage while they’re in your cupboard.

How quickly will wine glasses be delivered?

Delivery date for wine gifts depends on the delivery option you choose. We offer:

  • Standard gift delivery within 2-3 days (ideal for a thank you gift)
  • Next day gift delivery (a great option for last-minute gifts).
  • Named day gift delivery (perfect of anniversaries, special occasions, and birthdays).

Top tip: Add Unlimited membership at checkout for just £24 a year. You’ll then be able to choose next day delivery for free – as often as you like – even for a single bottle.

Please note – delivery date for hampers may vary, as they may be supplied by a partner supplier.

Can I add a greetings card or message with my wine gift?

Yes – you can add a gift card to your wine gift, or simply add a short message to the label.

  • The card or message options will appear when you are at checkout.
  • You can choose from a selection of cards.
  • You can add a card message of up to 10 lines of 24 characters per line..
  • The cost of adding a card is £1.99.
  • You can add a case label message of up to 100 characters.
  • A case label message is free.

What if someone wants to return my wine gift?
