Great wine does more than fill glasses at your wedding – it creates a sensory experience your guests will remember long after the final toast.
But finding the right wedding wine isn’t about choosing the most expensive label - it’s about selecting bottles to suit your celebration.
This guide covers the key steps to choosing your wedding wine, from calculating how much you’ll need to selecting the right bottles to complement your menu.
How much wine do you need for a wedding?
Our Wedding Wine specialists suggest budgeting two or three glasses of wine per guest to enjoy during the meal, with a 60/40 split of reds and whites.
Generally, a standard 750ml bottle is enough for around five glasses - so a case of 12 bottles will cater to approximately 60 glasses of wine.
From there, you’ll want to adjust your quantities based on a few key factors, including;
- the length of the reception
- any additional champagne toasts or welcome drinks
- how many courses you’ll have at wedding meal
- your guests’ drinking preferences (for example, beer or spirits drinkers)
- how many guests are likely to be driving
- whether you’re also having a cash bar.

7 Steps to Choose Your Wedding Wines
Choosing your wedding wines can feel like one more big decision on an already long list. But when done right, it can actually be one of the more enjoyable chapters in your wedding story!
1. Set your budget
Before diving into the wine selection, it's essential to set a realistic budget – but plan on adding 10–20% to your initial wine estimate to make sure you won’t be short of wine as the celebrations unfold.
To help you plan with confidence, our Wedding Wine Service offers sale-or-return on up to 25% of your order (for resalable bottles).
2. Match to season and setting
Different wines naturally align with different seasons. A sophisticated red wine is suitable for autumn or winter weddings, while a crisp white or a dry rosé might best accompany a spring or summer celebration.
Is your wedding setting casual, or a refined, elegant affair? A formal historic estate calls for classic varieties or vintage Champagne, while a relaxed barn wedding might better suit vibrant, fruit-forward blends.
3. Complement your menu
Your food and wine choices should complement each other. A versatile red and white wine should suffice for a conventional three-course meal. But a more sophisticated menu of more than three courses may require a broader range of wines to elevate each dish.
4. Lean towards crowd-pleasers
Your wedding reception might not be the time to try and win people over to an off-dry Riesling or a super bold Barolo. Opting for balanced wines that will appeal to a broad range of palates is usually the safe option.
For red wines, consider soft, easy-drinking options like Merlot, Shiraz, or Pinot Noir. Blends from Southern Italy or France can also be a hit.
For white wines, opt for crisp and refreshing options like Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc or lightly oaked Chardonnay.
5. (But don’t forget yourself)
Ultimately this is your day, and you should love what’s in your glass. If rosé makes you happy, make sure it’s there! If Aussie Shiraz was served on your first date and you both love it, that’s a perfect choice. The best wine for your wedding is entirely up to you!

6. Explore alcohol-free alternatives
Ensure your designated drivers and non-drinkers have something sophisticated to toast with - modern 0% sparkling wines are a fantastic choice.
7. Remember - timing is everything
It’s best to schedule your wine delivery for a few days before the wedding. This leaves room for any unexpected issues, ensuring you aren’t left without wine on the big day.
Don’t forget some fizz for the toast!
The Champagne toast is a long-standing wedding tradition, but all that bubbly could eat into your wedding budget. If you want to maximise your budget without sacrificing quality, consider these sparkling alternatives:
- Prosecco and Cava are popular alternatives to Champagne, with lighter bubbles and more fruity flavours.
- English Fizz – the rising star of the wine world, with some bottles even outshining famous Champagnes in competition!
- Crémant – an elegant alternative. Produced using the same traditional method as Champagne, it delivers a similar texture and flavour profile at a fraction of the cost.

6 of the best wines to serve at your wedding
1. Mussel Pot Sauvignon Blanc – New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is always a crowd pleaser, and this is our bestselling Kiwi Sauvignon of all. Vibrant, crisp and zesty, it pairs well with canapés, seafood and chicken as well as being a great choice for buffets.
2. w/o Organic Lucido – If you love Italian Pinot Grigio but fancy something different, try this citrusy Sicilian white wine. Not only is it organic, but it also comes in a beautiful recycled glass bottle and has a partner red to match (see below).
3. Opi Malbec – Opi won ‘Best Malbec of Argentina’ on its debut vintage, so you know you’re onto a winner with this as your wedding wine. Super-smooth and juicy, it’s great on its own as well as with red meats or mushroom dishes.
4. w/o Organic Frappato – Partner to the Lucido, this is a great red wine for summer as it’s so fresh, bright and fruity. Plus, it looks fabulous too. A great all-rounder, you can happily drink it on its own or pair with lighter buffet-style food, fish, poultry and all sorts of vegetarian dishes.
5. Moulin de Pontfract Rosé – Rosé is becoming increasingly popular as a wedding wine and it’s easy to see why. It’s perfect for a summer wedding and is a versatile choice with food, too. This is a Provence classic with a gorgeous pale pink colour and delicate summer berry fruit.
6. Roche Lacour Crémant de Limoux – Our most popular vintage sparkling wine, this is made just like Champagne yet comes in at a far more affordable price. The ideal sparkling wine for your wedding toast, to pair with canapés or just for sipping on its own.
