  • Albariño Grape Guide

Albariño is Spain’s signature white wine – loved for its zesty citrus, juicy peach flavours and mouthwatering freshness. But Spain isn’t the only place you’ll find Albariño wines.

Whether you're new to the grape or already a fan, this guide will help you discover what makes Albariño so special, and why it's perfect for seafood feasts and sunny afternoons in the garden.

What is Albariño?

Albariño (pronounced Al-bah-REE-nyo) is a white wine grape variety that produces crisp, dry, ultra-refreshing white wines. They’re usually unoaked and the best have a sea-breeze freshness and crisp minerality that echoes their coastal origins. They’re typically zesty and bright with citrus fruit – lemon and grapefruit – alongside ripe peachy flavours.

If you love crisp, aromatic white wines like Sauvignon Blanc, Albariño is a definite must-try.

Is Albariño dry or sweet?

Almost all Albariño wines are dry. Their ripe peach and citrus flavours give it a delicious fruitiness, but they are typically made in a crisp, dry style with refreshing acidity.

Where is Albariño grown?

Albariño thrives in cool, coastal climates and due to its popularity, you’ll now find Albariño grown around the world – from New Zealand and South Africa to California and even England. However, the vast majority of Albariño wines still come from northwestern Spain and northern Portugal and in two key regions:

Rías Baixas, Spain

Located in northwestern Spain in Galicia, Rías Baixas shares the same mineral-rich soils and cool climate as renowned regions like France’s Loire Valley and Marlborough in New Zealand. This helps create Albariños that are crisp, elegant and zesty with dazzling citrus, white peach and apricot flavours.

Made close to the Atlantic Ocean, these wines are also known for their pristine purity with a subtle sea-breeze, salty minerality.

Minho, Portugal

The Minho wine region lies at the far north of Portugal, bordering Spain (and the Rías Baixas region) and shares the same damp, cool, coastal climate as its neighbour. Alvarinho, as it’s known in Portugal, is the star grape of Vinho Verde – or green wines – a reference to the lush, green nature of the region (not the wine!).

Vinho Verde has traditionally been made with a blend of grapes but increasingly you’ll find single-varietal Alvarinho wines, the best of which come from the Monção e Melgaço sub-region, right on the Spanish border.

Take a look at our Beginner’s Guide to Vinho Verde to find out more about this fascinating wine region.

So what is the difference between Albariño and Alvarinho?

Albariño wines come from Spain (and is the name used when grown internationally.) Alvarinho wines come from Portugal. Same grape, different country. But other than that, very little!

The styles can vary slightly, so you often find the wines of Rías Baixas in Spain are a touch more minerally and citrussy, whereas the wines of the Minho in Portugal are a touch richer and more tropical with aromatic, floral notes. But these are subtle differences and if you like Albariño wines, you’ll likely love Alvarinho wines.

“Wherever it grows, Albariño holds onto its calling cards: bright acidity, perfumed stone fruit and a whisper of sea air.”

What food does Albariño pair well with?

Given its coastal origins, you won’t be surprised to learn that the best food match for Albariño is seafood. In fact, we reckon it’s one of the best white wines in the world to pair with simply grilled fish or a shellfish platter.

Albariño is also a great choice for picnics, pairing with charcuterie, salads, olives and goat’s cheese. And of course, one of the reasons it’s so popular in Spain is that Albariño is one of the most refreshing white wines around and perfect for sunshine sipping.
