Since its foundation, Poggio di Sotto has been a leader of Brunello of the finest quality. Wines that have elegance and finesse, yet with a long drive of power. That goes for their Rosso di Montalcino too. A very fine red to drink now or keep.

The Wine
Piero Palmucci founded this estate in 1989, in the southeasternmost corner of Montalcino, in Castelnuovo dell'Abate. Its wines quickly become some of the most sought after in this prestigious appellation. The property and its 22 hectares of vines enjoy a unique microclimate. In view of an extinct, snowcapped (even in summer) volcano, Mount Amiata, there is always a freshness to the air. The steeply sloping vineyards, all between 200-400 metres with the river Orcia snaking far below, are blessed with marl and galestro soils, littered with marine fossils. All this adds up to exceptional conditions for the Sangiovese vines and long-lived wines of immense finesse. Aged two years in cask and 6 months in bottle, this is a fine red. Decant early.

A terrific wine and one of a handful of Rossi that I can recommend for longer cellar aging
