Le Bordeaux de Tour du Roch-Milon 2018

Imagine you could secure a special occasion claret from the same soils and grape varieties as a £650 a bottle Bordeaux ‘First Growth’ at a fraction of the price. For this exciting scoop, we head to an estate in Pauillac, the priciest corner of Bordeaux.
This is a fine, mature claret from Château Tour du Roch-Milon, the vines of which perch on the same gravelly ridge as Mouton Rothschild, one of Bordeaux’s ‘famous five’ First Growths, whose 2010 vintage scored 98+ points from Parker. In fact, their vines share the same vineyard, demarcated only by different coloured stakes at the end of the rows. But because no official château existed here when Bordeaux properties were classified back in 1855, Tour du Roch-Milon missed out on becoming a classed growth like its neighbours.
That quirk of fate means it’s something of a fine wine lover’s secret bargain and buy this property’s so-called second wine – Le Bordeaux de Tour du Roch-Milon – from its younger vines, and the wine is even more of a steal.
From the outstanding 2018 vintage, this Bordeaux has layers of mature, ripe cassis and cedar notes, with hints of spice box and tobacco. A highly affordable red for a fine roast-meat lunch or special occasion.
