The Story Behind the Bottle
With over 300 years of tradition, Croft is one of the best-known names in the Douro. It was founded in York in 1588 by the Thompson family, but the Portuguese connection began in 1707, when they partnered with Irish brothers Thomas Phayre and Nathaniel Bradley, already trading from Oporto. Yorkshireman John Croft joined in 1736, giving the firm its name. Today, Croft’s jewel in the crown is Quinta do Roêda – one of the Douro’s finest estates, home to some of the region’s oldest vineyards and the main source of its Vintage ports. 2003 was a great year – “the wines look well-structured and certainly long-lived” (Decanter). Delicious now, or cellar for another two decades.
