The Story Behind the Bottle

Tony Laithwaite first championed the little region of Jurançon in southwest France 40 years ago and customers loved the wine. In 2019 he discovered another outstanding white from a tiny, 3-hectare vineyard – Clos de la Vierge – and again customers have really taken to it.

Until 2024, the estate was run by two 70+ year old sisters, Anne-Marie and Christiane, who tended vines that are almost the same age, while their 95-year-old maman looked after the kitchen garden. Today they have sadly lost Anne-Marie, but their great wines continue.

Clos de la Vierge is made purely from the local superstar grape, Gros Manseng. This variety produces remarkable wine, with richness and weight, what the French term ‘gras’ - lush peachy fruit and floral aromas, with a lovely whip of mineral freshness. The perfect wine to enjoy on its own or with garlic chicken or roasted cod loin.
